Air Duct and Dryer Vent Inspections on Long Island
Not sure whether your ducts or dryer vents need cleaning? Start with an inspection. We’ll tell you exactly what’s going on inside your system — no commitment, no pressure to buy a cleaning you don’t need.
Too many companies skip the inspection and go straight to selling you a cleaning package. We’d rather look first, show you what we find, and let you decide. If your system is clean, we’ll tell you. If it needs work, we’ll explain why and what it’ll cost.
What a Duct Inspection Covers
We visually inspect accessible ductwork using cameras and direct observation. Here’s what we’re checking:
Buildup and contamination. Dust, debris, pet hair, insulation particles, mold growth — we document everything we find with photos so you can see it for yourself.
Duct condition. Flexible ductwork sags over time. Metal ducts develop gaps at joints. Older systems may have deteriorating insulation wrapping. We check the physical condition of the ductwork and note anything that needs repair or replacement.
Airflow and leakage. Disconnected ducts, crushed flex lines, and leaky joints waste energy and reduce comfort. We identify airflow problems that might explain why certain rooms are always too hot or too cold.
Moisture and mold indicators. Condensation, standing water, visible mold, and musty odors all signal problems that need attention before they get worse. Long Island’s humidity makes this especially common — basements in Islip, Babylon, and Brookhaven are particularly prone.
Dryer Vent Inspection
Dryer vent fires cause an estimated 2,900 house fires per year in the United States. Lint buildup is the number one cause. But here’s the thing — you can’t see most of the lint. It accumulates in the sections of vent that run through walls, floors, and attic spaces.
Our dryer vent inspection checks:
- Lint accumulation throughout the entire vent run
- Vent material and routing (some installations use materials that aren’t up to code)
- Exterior vent flap operation
- Overall vent length and number of bends (longer runs and more bends = higher fire risk)
- Connection integrity at the dryer and at all joints
Homes built in the 80s and 90s across places like Selden, Centereach, and Medford often have dryer vents that run 20-30 feet with multiple bends. These are high-risk configurations that need regular inspection and cleaning.
When to Get an Inspection
There are a few situations where an inspection makes sense before committing to a full cleaning:
- Before buying a home — Know what you’re getting. Pair this with a comprehensive home inspection for the complete picture.
- After a renovation — Construction debris in ducts is almost guaranteed after major work.
- When symptoms appear — Musty smells, increased allergies, visible dust from vents, or a dryer that takes multiple cycles to dry clothes.
- Routine check-up — Even if nothing seems wrong, a quick inspection every couple of years catches problems early.
- Before selling your home — A clean report on your duct system is one more thing that sets your listing apart.
Tied into the Home Inspection Process
We work closely with home inspection professionals across Long Island. When The Inspection Boys identifies concerns about HVAC systems, ductwork conditions, or potential mold during a home inspection, they often recommend a detailed duct inspection as the next step. It’s a natural extension of the inspection process.
For real estate agents and inspectors looking to deepen their knowledge of HVAC and environmental systems, Main St Success offers professional education programs covering these topics.
